MOD-Sport is a centre which allows all school-going children the opportunity to participate in Sports and Life-skills based activities. MOD-Sport is a collection of various sports centres such as:
- MOD ( Mass participation; Opportunity and access; Development and growth ) Sport Centre,
- SHARP ( Sport; Health; Advancement of and in sport; Research and Policy development) Sport Centre,and
- WCSS ( Western Cape Sport School ).
The purpose of the MOD-Sport Centres is to enable all school-going children with the opportunity to access beginner, intermediate and advanced levels of coaching in various forms of sport. Talent Identification is one of the opportunities that is provided in these centres.
MOD-Sport Centres creates positive school-going children by allowing them to access opportunities in Game skills and Life-skills. These Centres improves the quality and performance of the players which participate in the WECASSO (Western Cape School Sport Organisation) and the WCSS (Western Cape Sports School). WECASSO's responsibility is to coordinate leagues and competitive-based sport, where WCSS being the high performance sports school.
There are various levels of coaching beginners, Intermediate and Advanced.
Beginner:
- Provides coaching and talent identification for all learners.
Intermediate:
- Provides Learners with the potential to succeed in sport, by allowing exposure to sports science, advanced coaching methodologies, research, policy development and talent identification.
Advanced:
- Provides all learners with the potential to succeed in sport with career opportunities in and through sport.
Participation takes place Monday to Fridays in the following Grade levels.
- Grades R; 1 and 2 - Basic Sports Skills and Life Skills
- 13h15 to 14h15
- Grades 3; 4 and 5 - Modified Sports Skills and Life Skills
- 14h30 to 15h30
- Grades 6; 7; 8 and 9 - Specific Sports Skills and Life skills
- (a) 15h45 to 16h45
(b) 17h00 to 18h00
These Grade participations take place at the various venues:
- Beginners takes place at the MOD-Sports Centres;
- Intermediate takes place at the SHARP Centres;
- Advanced takes place at the Western Cape Sports School in Kuils River, Cape Town.
During the course of 2011 there will be more rollouts of MOD-Sports Centres in the Western Cape which consists of:
- 49 Primary School-Based MOD-Sports Centres
- 49 High School-Based MOD-Sports Centres
- 28 Farm-Based MOD-Sports Centres
- 16 Community-Based MOD-Sports Centres
